2.0 ESTABLISHMENT & LEGAL STATUS
• GAPFA Ghana was incorporated under the Companies code, 1993 (Act 179) in 1979.
•It is an Association limited by guarantee.
• GAPFA Ghana is also permitted under the sections 78 and 79 of the Local Government act of 1993 (Act 462) and the AMA Bye Laws of 1995 to operate as an Industrial Establishment ‘A’
•Registered with the Ghana Feed millers Association.
•Registered member of the Ghana Grains council3.0 BACKGROUND/HISTORY
•In the face of shortages of agricultural inputs in the 1970’s a group of mainly small scale farmers came together under the leadership of the late Mr. Adolphus Kluffio to form the Association in 1978.The young Association was located in a private home in La.
•In 1983 GAPFA Ghana’s operations were moved to a rented premise in Nima. That year (1983) also marked a watershed in the history of the Association. It was in this year that GAPFA Ghana took the decision to set up its own feed mill to ensure a regular supply of high quality feed to its members.
•By 1991 GAPFA Ghana’s operations had grown so much that the need was felt to acquire landed property for a further expansion of its operations.
•The grounds on which we are now together with the building were therefore acquired in 1992.
•As at now GAPFA Ghana has a work force of forty-seven (47) and a membership of over 600 with about 500 active members mainly small and medium scale poultry farmers.
•In spite of our name (Greater Accra Poultry Farmers association) our members cut across the length and breadth of the country, some of our members are from other regions of the counter such as Ashanti, Central, Western, Eastern and Brong -Ahafo.4.0 GOVERNANCE
GAPFA Ghana is managed by an Executive Secretary who is a full time employee working closely with a four-man Management Committee elected annually by a fifteen (15) member Executive Council, which itself is elected by the general body.
5.0 NATURE OF BUSINESS
The Greater Accra Poultry Farmers Association is under the Agricultural Manufacturing Industry and is mainly into the production of poultry feed for its members who are predominantly small and medium scale poultry farmers.
6.0 GAPFA MISSION STATEMENT
To organize small and medium scale poultry farmers into viable economic units through the provision of competitively priced inputs such as Feed and Drugs.
And to improve their technical and managerial skills through poultry seminars and extension services.7.0 SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
•To foster and promote unity of action within the ranks of poultry producers, and to protect the interest of the industry.
•To arrange for bulk purchases of feed, drugs and other inputs required for the improvement of poultry farming and distribute to members at an affordable prices to facilitate reasonable productivity.
•To organize marketing facilities for its members.
•To practice modernized poultry farming through in-service training for poultry assistants of members, and training facilities to all those interested in the poultry farming especially school leavers in order that they may take to the industry as their career.
•To act as the mouthpiece of the poultry farmers in all matters relation to poultry (and Livestock) and to participate in all deliberations affecting the industry as a whole, to enhance the progress of the industry in Ghana.
